The Power of Coping Skills

Living with a mental illness can be a very challenging task. Taking medications prescribed by your doctor, along with going to a therapist or groups are the principal factors to getting better and staying healthy. Medications, however, are not one-hundred percent effective all the time. Let’s face it. We have a mental illness and there are going to be bad days every so often. That’s why we need to prepare ourselves and develop an arsenal of coping skills and knowledge, so that we can get through tough moments, nasty people and plain old bad days that may pull us down.

It's very important to have two types of coping skills.

Quick Skills: quick coping skills usually last anywhere from 30 seconds to 20 minutes.
Long Lasting Skills: long lasting coping skills last much longer, maybe 8 hours or even longer.

A Look at Quick Coping Skills...
Situations when you may need to use your quick coping skills. When you're riding on the bus or subway. Waiting in line at the bank or grocery store. Any situation where something or someone may trigger your anxiety or depression, but where the situation may last for only a few minutes. In these moments, we need coping skills that are very easy to do and are fast and effective.

  • BreathingMental Illness Coping Skills
  • Pray
  • Meditation
  • Relaxation Techniques
  • Walking
  • Listening to Music
  • Smiling and Laughing
  • Count to 20, 50 or 100 if needed
  • Keep funny pics or pics that make you happy on your phone.
  • Smiling and Laughing

 

A Look at Long Lasting Coping Skills... 
Other situations call for coping skills that help over a long period of time. Your attacks could be triggered by attending a funeral, or going to an event where there are way too many people, financial and relationships problems can also bring on stress and anxiety. Sometimes you may just a have dreadful day or two, maybe even longer. This is the way we were built and it's okay. We just learn to understand and add every possible tool that can help us through life.

  • Friends/Support
  • Drawing/Painting
  • Puzzles/Board Games
  • Play an Instrument
  • Relaxing in Hot Tub or Hot Bath
  • Smiling and Laughing
